Gary & Arnies 69k trek - Backpack, Tent and Solar charger

https://www.justgiving.com/ArnieandGarys67kTrek

Backpack, Tent and Solar charger

I collected backpack tonight and got a 3L water bladder for it as well.  Tent arrived last Saturday and Solar phone charger arrived today as well.

So now I have back pack I can check if any of the sleeping bags we have can be used.

Solar charger has a power bank on it so apparently you charge it from mains 1st it then has approx 5 charges in it, but it will pick up 1 phone charge a day when its hanging on back pack so in theory should never run out.  We'll see.

16 days to go so I have time to test a few things.

[Update 06/06/15]
This is the solar charger
http://www.mobilesolarchargers.co.uk/shop/details/camping-solar-charger

I managed to charge my phone 4 times as follows

  1. Half charge
  2. Full Charge well phone on 14%
  3. Half charge
  4. Full Charge phone on 8%
Now testing the solar side of it so fully recharged power bank from mains.

  1. Starting point fully recharged power bank from mains.
  2. Fully Charged up phone from 14%
  3. Left power bank out in sunny cloudy day was outside for at least 8 hours 1 green bar showing
  4. Fully Charged phone from 12%
  5. Left power bank out on overcast in morning and then sunny cloudy day was outside for at least 8 hours 1 green bar showing, had 3 blue by end of day outside.
  6. Phone now charging again from about 14% > Fully charged by morning
  7. Left power bank out in sunny cloudy day was outside for at least 9.5 hours 1 green bar showing
  8. Phone now charging again from 9% > Phone charged to 43% by morning
  9. Left power bank out in sunny cloudy day was outside for at least 9.5 hours 1 green bar showing
  10. Phone now charging again from about 14% > No difference to phone in morning still at 14%
  11. Recharging phone on mains as phone bank fully drained and solar making no difference.
I contacted the company and they were very good, said that it sounded like I had a faulty unit as it should charge better than that. They dispatched another one straight away (arrived next morning.  Also sent a solar panel for me to trial so that should be fun.

Gary & Arnies 69k trek - Back pack search

https://www.justgiving.com/ArnieandGarys67kTrek

The search for a decent backpack has led me here, the Osprey Atmos 65 AG its a lot more than I wanted to spend and if I was only going to do this one trip then I wouldn't contemplate the outlay.  But as I'm considering the trip with Tom sometime after my shoulder has been fixed, I figure its worth the additional outlay. Especially as its extremely comfortable.

Gary & Arnies 69k trek - Lulworth Army Ranges

Army Ranges to check

http://www.southwestcoastpath.org.uk/walkthepath/armyranges/

There are some army ranges that I need to check on because if they are closed when we get there its a long walk around it.

Lulworth Ranges, (Dorset)
(Grid ref: between SY 828 797 and SY 900 790)

"Information about the range walks can be obtained from the Range Control Office (0900-1630 hrs Mon-Fri and during the weekends when the ranges walks are closed), Tel: 01929 404819."

Hmmm we may have a problem here as unable to find out for definate if the path is open or not. If closed may have to resort to a cab rather than walk 13 miles around the firing range.

[Update 28/05/15]
I cant find any information that says whether the south west coast path is open weekdays during June between Kimmerdge and Lulworth. It says when closed there will be flags flying and the gates will be locked.  I'm not sure if this relates to the walks actually on the Lulworth ranges or if it includes the SWCP.  Ive looked on the satellite and cant see any evidence of any gates on the coastal path.  So we will just go for it and see what we've got when we get there.  If we have to go around then we'll have to go around either by cab, walking or bus.  Might get there and find Ive spent hours looking into it and its not a problem, we'll see.

[Update 05/06/15]
Its looking like the ranges will be closed which is a big dissappointment as it means we can travel the South West Coast Path during the week.  Should have planned to get there so we could traverse that area at the weekend.

22k (13m) around 9k (5m) along coastal path

Ok so it looks like I need to try and reschedule so that we arrive at the area at the weekend when the coastal path will be open.  Need to try a change holiday dates at work to Wed 17th to Tuesday 23rd.

Tent arrived and tested

Tent arrived on Saturday and finally got round to putting it up for the 1st time after a 6 mile walk.  Supposed to take 7 mins but it took me 27 although that was with various conversations going on and I'd never done it before.  Arnie was well happy in it and its very snug with room for a pack pack, so well pleased with it.

Here's a video of how it should be done.

Gary & Arnies 69k trek - Head here and donate the price of a beer - for Arthritis Research UK

https://www.justgiving.com/ArnieandGarys67kTrek

I have 465 friends on Facebook so I figure if I can get under half of those to donate to Arthritis Research UK the price of a half pint of beer or if your generous a pint of beer and that money goes to the charity then they'll make a few quid.

So that's all I'm asking don't go breaking the bank just donate the price of a Pint or a Half.

Pint of beer = £3.10

Half of beer = £1.60

[Update 28/05/15]
I have increased my target to £200

Gary & Arnies 69k trek - Sob Story ... You know whats coming

Sob Story

As soon as you see those words you just know whats coming. Someone is going to try and get money out of you and to make it easier to get you to take action they are going to tug at your heart strings.  Everyone does it Live aid shows videos of starving children, xfactor contestants tell you about being bullied at school, then their mum was run over by a bus but survived only to be eaten by a crocodile 4 years later. Well something like that :-) but you get the picture.

Anyway so now you know the mechanics, here's my attempt.

Back in 2003 I started having problems with my knees.  Every time I got out the car it felt like something slipped out and it would take like 30 Min's before it went back.

To cut a long story short to cure it I decided to run a Marathon :-) Yup I know what your thinking, all I'm going to say is I did the VLM in 2005 and I haven't had any problems with knee's since. So make of it what you will.  In case anyone's interested here's the blog of my marathon, sorry but a lot of the links no longer work.  I didn't do to bad at raising money for shooting stars either  https://www.justgiving.com/garyrudley

During 2004 when I was training for the marathon I had a Motorbike accident and tore a tendon in my left shoulder.  That took about a year to fix and messed with my training but was OK for the actual marathon day.

After taking 5h 47m to do the marathon I decided to train more and try to run sub 4.  I was getting there with a Half at 2h 3mins, then did a massive PB at Maidenhead 10, taking 24mins of my previous time but my right ankle also gave up.  After many visits to doctor, physio and eventually xrays I was informed that I had Arthritis in my ankle and shouldn't run again if I still wanted to be able to walk later in life.  I have to admit I did try but the pain in my ankle was clearly of the type where your doing damage. So that was the end of running in 2009 really.

Fast forward to 2014/2015 and I sneezed which re-tore the tendon in my left shoulder. Ill cut this short but many visits to specialists and visits for xrays, ultrasound scans and MRI scans and they have discovered I have signs of arthritis in both shoulders a torn tendon in left shoulder and a full thickness rupture of the supraspinatus tendon (Rupture means detached basically).  So I don't know how, but I have whats left of a muscle floating around in my shoulder and one end is not attached to anything.

So back to Arnie and Me walking 65k.  Arnie has arthritis, I have arthritis, my Mum had arthritis, my Brother has arthritis and I know many other people who suffer with variants.  I also know that whatever issues I have they are not life threatening and we all know people that have their own personal battles with the big C.

In my instance pain is a good indicator as it lets you know your still alive.

So I have decided to try and raise a little money for Arthritis Research

We are going to walk 65k along south coast path from Bournmouth to Weymouth without stopping in B&Bs just using a small tent.  Its not going to be easy due to both mine and Arnie's body limitations but we'll get there.

I have 465 friends on Facebook so I figure if I can get under half of those to donate to me a half pint of beer or if your generous a pint of beer and that money goes to the charity then they'll make a few quid and we all get good karma :-)

So that's all I'm asking don't go breaking the bank just buy me a Pint or a Half.

Pint of beer = £3.10
Half of beer = £1.60

So head here and buy me a beer :-)

Gary & Arnies 69k trek - Solar charger

https://www.justgiving.com/ArnieandGarys67kTrek

Solar charger

I need a solar charger to stop the family panicking when phone battery gets low.  This is proving more difficult than I thought.  Most of the ones I have looked at the solar part doesn't seem to work or they don't get good reviews. I've looked at several in the £15-£30 bracket but the reviews tend to say the solar part is useless.  I've found one at £59 which has very good review.

The question is do I go for say two £15 ones with no solar, it's looking like I might get two charges out of each before they would need mains charging. Or go for the good solar charger at £59, actually I saw it in a review at £59 but when I checked on Amazon they were £95.

More research needed methinks.

Most reviewers on Amazon seem to say that the solar panel chargers just dont work. So ive been hunting for one with reasonable reviews.  Found the Voltaic Amp which appears good but the only review is on top ten reviews.  Id like to hear some people who have actually bought one review it.

http://solar-phone-charger-review.toptenreviews.com/voltaic-amp-review.html

Think ive decided to leave the solar chargers as they dont seem too reliable.

So looking at these, its so difficult finding something that you know is going to work.

How to S.H.I.T in the woods

I had a realisation that on the trek between Swanage and Lulworth cove, which is 20 miles, there is not a great deal except sea, path and grass :-)

So what do I do if I need a poo as Arnie wont be clearing it up .... although maybe I could eat something really rich :-) ... hmmmm

Anyway thought Id better investigate proper wilds pooing etiquette and found these useful articles.

Gary & Arnies 69k trek - The 1st leg

https://www.justgiving.com/ArnieandGarys67kTrek

This is the 1st part of Arnie and Gary's trek

Basically on the 15th June we are intending to
Walk to Chertsey rail station and get the train to Weybridge
From Weybridge train to Woking
From Woking to Parkstone, Bournmouth.
Then we walk to Studland ish as below and somewhere in this area find a place to stick a very small tent up for the night.

There is a sea food bar near the ferry crossing on Studland side and a Pub near where it says Studland on the map, so we should have no problem with food or toilets in this area.  Things get difficult after Swanage as there is not a great deal for 20 miles. Unfortunately Arnie has stated that there is no way he is picking my poo up so its down to me, should be interesting.  See my other blog How to S.H.I.T in the woods.
